During a field trip to the Peña-Corada Unit of the southernmost Esla region of the Cantabrian Mountains in 1927, the German stratigrapher Wilhelm Kegel sampled brachiopods and bivalves from a section in the Laoz valley near La Ercina. The stratigraphic position is believed to be part of the Nocedo Formation of Frasnian age. This fauna includes poorly preserved steinkerns of a near-shore bivalve fauna that was prepared for publication including labels and proposed names, but never published. The fauna represents only a very small and random part of the former community. But as information on Frasnian bivalves is scarce, the few specimens add important information on the distribution and palaeogeographic occurrence of near-shore, that is, Rhenish Facies... |

After a general presentation of the Thau lagoon together with its geographic location, socio-economic activities linked to shellfish culture and fishing, this paper investigates the health conditions of the shellfish harvesting areas. I he influence of heavy rainfall following a prolonged drought period is underlined as a determining factor of the momentary bacterial pollution in the harvesting areas, leading to a suspension of sales based on analyses relying solely on the detection of faecal coliforms. As of 1989, bacteriological monitoring was reorganized in the form of a data collection network taking into consideration environmental assessments of water quality as well as shellfish hygiene in order to protect consumer health. Its extension to the... |

Since 1991, high mortality rates of larvae and juveniles of different bivalve mollusc species associated with herpesvirus infections have been reported in different countries. The aim of this study was to determine if more than one helpesvirus species was responsible for these infections or just one species exhibiting polymorphism. The investigations concentrated on the analysis of the virus genome, studies of virus transmission in different mollusc species and on the potential role of bivalve adults in the occurrence of infections. The analysis of various target sequences within the virus genome present in infected larvae samples demonstrated the presence of polymorphism. More notably a variant of the virus was identified and the variation appears... |

Introduction: During each summer season, the IFREMER laboratory of Arcachon monitors, within the framework of the agreement with the Arcachon- Aquitaine Shellfish Farming Regional Section (SRC), the reproduction of cup oysters in the Arcachon basin. This monitoring has as its goal to furnish oyster farmers with the information needed to implement spat catches: - dates and size of egg clutches, - larvae development rate, - presence in the environment of more evolved stages (close to fixation). Reproduction was monitored between mid-June and mid-September, plankton was fished four times per week at the various sites representative of the basin. Oyster larvae at various stages are enumerated there. At the end of the reproductive season (September to... |

Bivalve molluscs possess several types of hemolymph cells (hemocytes), involved in internal defense and other physiological functions. Studies in pathological and experimental conditions have shown their micro- and macrophagic ability. However, the mechanisms of intracellular digestion are incompletely known in these organisms. The lysosomal apparatus of hemocytes was therefore investigated in several species by hydrolase localization with the electron microscope. The cytoplasmic granules of granulocytes displayed a strong acid beta -glycerophosphatase activity. Previous observations had shown that these granules may contain phagocytized material. This indicates that intracellular digestion is achieved in these organelles. Acid beta -glycerophosphatase... |

A polyclonal rabbit anti-human lysozyme (Dako) was applied on histological sections from bivalve mollusc and revealed with a mouse anti-rabbit IgG fluorescein conjugated antibody to localise cellular lysozyme in tissues where its activity had previously detected by enzymatic techniques. Labelling occurred in the cytoplasm of epithelial cells covering the body. This is in agreement with the intracellular distribution of this enzyme. In the Lucinid Lucinella divaricata gills, the cytoplasm of bacteriocytes was also labelled. This suggests that antibacterial activity occurred in these cells. Control sections indicate that fluorescence was a consequence of true primary antibody fixation. However, its specificity should be verified by electrophoretical... |

A Critical Hazard Analysis Rating (CHAR) based on the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) concept is used to monitor oyster purification in New South Wales (N.S.W.), Australia. Critical areas for assessment include oyster condition, separation of raw and treated oysters, water quality (turbidity, salinity, temperature, aeration, circulation), purification period, flow rate, steriliser efficiency and tank hydraulics. Batch records and product identification are included. Purification supplements a total management program for producing safe oysters. The rating can also be used to endorse oysters produced under industry self-regulatory, quality assurance programs. The four main CHAR areas are operational standards, quality assurance, public health... |

Two different biomasses (100 g multiplied by m super(-2) and 1 kg multiplied by m super(-2)) of oysters were put in identical sea-water ponds, thus leading to different trophic conditions, corresponding to rearing techniques. Changes in growth, biochemical composition and sexual maturation were recorded for two age groups. The first one included 9 month-old oysters and the second one 21 month-old oysters, at the beginning of the experiment. For both age groups, significant differences were observed in growth and biochemical composition. Lipids were accumulated faster for the lower biomass. However, the only difference concerning glycogen was observed on the older oysters. They showed a peak at the lowest biomass and a decrease at the larger biomass. Sexual... |

Shellfish consumption is clearly associated with the transmission of enteric viruses. The channel of transmission of enteric viruses to human beings could be decreased particularly if the systems of depuration of shellfish were optimized, standardized and if their viral efficiency was controlled. The purpose of this work was to study the contamination of oysters and to assess the efficiency of several depuration processes. Our study have demonstrated that in some cases, 50% of oysters samples contain enteric viruses or H.A.V. antigen and the quantities of viruses range from 17 to 246 FF for the rotaviruses and from 124 to 200 for the enteroviruses per 100 g of tissue. According to our results, the exclusive use of a bacteriological criterium to determine... |

The black-lip pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera lives and reproduces with high performance in most of Tuamotu Lagoons. Technics to collect spats, to culture juveniles and to operate oysters were quickly found and applicated. Nevertheless, the sudden rise of this activity has been correlated with an anarchic development. For instance, large occupation of areas in the lagoons, cultivation of numerous oysters in confined areas, lack of knowledge on the basis culture technics in many farms. In 1985, mass mortalities have appeared in some lagoons and 50 to 80% of cultured stock died. Some investigations have been done but no explanation was found. In 1988, the mortalities are still very high. An analysis of cooperative production results from 1979 to 1988... |

Between 1980 and 1986, some Arcachon oyster farmers took up breeding the Japanese clam on the foreshore (Robert et Deltreil, 1990). This production was short lived. The steep fall in prices due to economic competition from Spain, Portugal, Italy and Tunisia, predator action such as the trigger fish (Popovsky et al., 1999), added to the significant amount of mortality that occurred in the summer and autumn of 1992 that affected two-thirds of the total stock, led to clam farming being abandoned at the end of the 1980s. In the Arcachon basin, the Japanese clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) population, now natural to the area, has found favourable conditions for development and is expanding rapidly there. This species has been supplanting the local species... |

Introduction: With the objective of diversifying current fishing and at the request of professionals in Aquitaine, the Regional Commission of Maritime Fishing and Marine Breeding (CRPMEM) of Aquitaine has started a discussion about the possibilities of opening a shellfishery. In the context of this course of action, and because of the absence of information on the presence and size of the resource, the CRPMEM of Aquitaine asked IFREMER's Halieutic Resources Laboratory of Aquitaine (LRHA) for assistance in acquiring information on the subject. At the same time, a prospective analysis study of the exploitation of shellfish off the coast of Aquitaineregulation and business sectionwas performed by the CRPMEM of Aquitaine (Coiffec, 2006). At that same time,... |
